Fun Run & Festival 2014 – Post Event Report

This was the 24th YMCA North London Fun Run & Festival, an event we are very pleased to organise, promoting physical activity, community cohesion and fun! We were blessed with sunshine, although for the 2,500 adult 10k runners, it added to the challenge they set themselves.

Eastenders actor Peter Beale, aka Ben Hardy, started off the adult 10k race, and then headed swiftly over the line himself. The runners were cheered across the start by a huge crowd of spectators, and headed out onto Priory Road. A major new addition to the race this year was the permission granted to YMCA North London to close Priory Road for the race. This ensures as safe an event as we can possibly provide. The route is vitally marshalled by London Heathside Club, as well as volunteers from the YMCA North London. They all did a fantastic job guiding the runners around the, at times, hilly course, which ended up back in Priory Park.

The first man to finish was a London Heathside runner, Tom Aldred, of London Heathside Runners, in a cracking time of 32.31 mins. The first woman to cross the line in an outstanding time was Catherine Jeremiah from London Heathside Runners. London Heathside Runners repeated their triumph by taking the affiliated team prizes, both men’s and women’s and the unaffiliated team prize was won again by the Coolhurst Trotters.

The Mayor of Haringey, Cllr Sheila Peacock, arrived at midday to open the 9 children’s 1-mile races as well as to hand out some of the hard-won trophies for the children’s races. She did a great job and we were delighted to have her involved to such an extent on the day.

Home Tiles of Crouch End handed out water and t-shirts to the runners finishing their races, and their continuing sponsorship of the event is greatly appreciated.

In the Festival field we had a full line up, ably assembled by Kim Staniland who did a brilliant job of arranging the acts in a lively and engaging schedule of talent on the day. The acts ranged from solo artists to groups, and this year for the first time we had some young residents from the YMCA North London hostel performing. The Festival has grown in the four years it has been added onto the Races, and now is made up of over twenty local businesses supplying food, drink, rides and games for kids of all ages.

New for 2014 was the bar tent which was provided by Andy, of Moors Bar, here in Crouch End. We wanted to thank Andy for his sponsorship, his bar was a very welcome addition and we look forward to more of the same next year. Last but by no means least, we must extend our profound gratitude to Greene & Co, who for the 5th year running has been the major sponsor of the Festival. Without their continued support and generosity, we would not be able to put the festival together, so we would like to thank them again for their great commitment to our event. We must also thank the community of Crouch End itself for supporting the event in large numbers. We estimate that around 5,500 people attended throughout the day. We look forward to working again with you all for next year’s Fun Run & Festival!

Ten races were run, with runners of all ages and abilities and we congratulate each and every runner on their energy and also their commitment to the event. The Fun Run & Festival is our largest fund raiser, a really fun day where the community gets together to help raise funds for vulnerable young homeless people to enable them to build a better future. Although your generous sponsorship and Just Giving is still being collated, we are on track to exceed our target of £30,000. We would like to offer you our enormous gratitude, we hope you and your families and friends continue to be involved and that you will take part next year – THANK YOU!!
